Nicole Lang Professor Everett English 2322 28 November 2015 Honest Iago A villain is typically characterized as a being who is corrupt, devious, and deceptive. Machiavelli is considered to be all of the above. He and Iago both believe in striving for their goals and having a strong ambition for greatness, which in retrospect, sounds like a good trait to have. However, characters that are true Machiavellianââ¬â¢s believe that the end justifies the mean, making them the worst kind of villain. Nicolà ² Machiavelli was most famous for writing the essay The Prince during the 1500ââ¬â¢s, which emphasized the need for stability, rather than fairness. The text was written as a guide to keeping power above all else. As Machiavelli has proved to be both repellent and enticing, the message of his essay has often been misinterpreted. The most common misreading is to suggest that Machiavelli advocates the idea that ââ¬Ëbeing evil for the sake of being evil is acceptableââ¬â¢. However, as John Roe has noted, ââ¬ËMachiavelli at no point advocates the practice of evil as acceptable in itself ââ¬â despite what his many detractors then and now have said; he concedes, rather, that evil sometimes has to be usedââ¬â¢ (2). It is in this respect that characters such as Hamlet can be viewed as Machiavellian but not truly Machiavellian.
